ANCIENT PRE-COLUMBIAN /MAYAN BURNISHED POTTERY DOG FIGURINE From the ruins of the Itzná (Edzna) site in the Campeche region with remains of a deep original brown tone with root marks in a black tone This ceramic dog It stands on its four legs and has a well-rounded intentionally realistic form. During a journey of archaeological exploration in the deep jungles of Yucatan from 1928-1933 following the notes, maps, with early photographic images of pyramids and temples ruins with documents left behind by the French Archeologist Desire Clude from his earlier explorations and discoveries at the turn of the century; this vast Mayan civilization ruins remained unknown to archaeologists and was not investigated because of its remote localization in the deep jungles of Yucatan. The discovered of this dog ceramic figurine was underneath the rubble of a collapse vaulted chamber under a building described as Structure II next to a ritual deposit of ceramics and many other objects. These figures were produced in what is now Western Mexico from the 3rd Century B.C. Dogs were useful on one's inevitable journey to the underworld and were therefore placed with the deceased as trusty companions.Based on the analysis of the archaeological materials corresponding to the Itzna ruins at that time, the archaeologists documented all the artifacts and sites to be Classic Period 250 A.D.- 900 A.D. Many years later Dr. J. Kenstein found that the TL test conducted on this ceramic artifact that in fact the measurements were accurate to within 10%, despite large fluctuations in the irradiation beam thereby establishing a “last heated during” marker or date to be between 3,000-3,500 years old. Therefore, the archeological discovery and excavations in the ruins of Itzna are actually Ancient PreClassic Period much older than the Classic Period. The Ancient Western Mexican cultures stand out over other pre-Columbian cultures for their vast production of pottery, of an unequaled quality and variety. These figurines were to form part of the tomb goods of the deceased and that is why they have almost always been found in tombs. This has been decisive in their preservation to the present day, and as a result they have been found mostly intact and in appearance as they were originally. According to my Grandfather and Dr. J. Kenstein the word Edzná has probably derived from Itzná, a Mayan word that means "House of the Itzáes" Condition: In fine condition, excellent age all with beautiful burnish and original desert related patina and with evidence of pre- excavation mineral deposits.Overall Dimensions: Height: 4.5/8” (11.63) cm Length: 7.3/4” (18.64) cm Width Front: 5.1/4” (13.06) cm Width Rear: 5.5/8” (14.18) cm Appraisal value (1995) | $3,500.
