ANCIENT MAYAN STUCCO HEAD CLASSIC PERIOD. 300-900 A.D. From Calakmul in the Campeche region with remains of deep red pigment coloration overall. Ancient Mayan stucco head, Classic Period (300-900), originates from the Archeological Mayan site of Calakmul in the Campeche region. During a journey of archaeological exploration in the deep jungles of Yucatan in 1931-1933. This expedition was sponsor by The Carnegie Institution after my grandfather convinced Cyrus L. Lundell that a large Mayan civilization ruins existed in the area after it was discovered at the turn of the century by Desire Clude; my grandfather had notes, maps, with early photographic images of pyramids and temples ruins with documents from his explorations and discoveries. This vast Mayan civilization ruins remained unknown to archaeologists and was not investigated because of its remote localization, but most of all because some of the carved monuments there were quite deteriorated and presented the epigraphist with extremely limited information at that time. They rediscovered the Maya city of Calakmul, which had been hidden in the jungle for 1,000 years. They discovered and identified more than 1,500 Mayan artifacts, ritual deposits, burial sites, stelas, altars and over 2,000 plants were identified. This particular stucco head, which was part of a larger pictorial façade narrative, illustrates the close connection between the gods and Mayan aristocracy. The discovered of this stucco head was underneath the rubble of a collapse vaulted chamber next to a ritual deposit of ceramics and one tomb that contained a male skeleton wrapped in textiles and rich offerings that included jade ear ornaments, ritual offerings, jade and carved stone necklaces with jadeite fragments. Though no inscribed artifacts were found that would positively identify the remains to be a king, archaeologists said the presence of large jade ear ornaments, jadeite, ceramic figurines, carved bones and many other ritual offerings indicates that the man in the tomb was a high priest or a powerful political dignitary. Some of the stucco heads found under the same Structure are in display at Peabody Museum, Harvard, The Musées Royaux d'art et d'Histoire, Brussels, Belgium, the Museum Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, several Museums in Mexico and many others have been auctioned at many prestigious International Auctions. The whole surface of the face is cover with encrustation from the original excavations with good deep red pigment and black linear around the eyes all in its original state of preservation through the hundreds of years.
